Mogonisi Bay, at the southern tip of Paxos, is a drive of 10 minutes from Gaios. Just above Balos beach, two bays before Mogonisi Bay, there is a cluster of six villas, each with good privacy and surrounded by a headland of olive and cypress trees.

Two of these villas (Apollo and Hestia) stand out for their large and beautifully landscaped gardens – hillside terraces of rosemary tumbling over weathered stone walls with soft blue plumbago and rich red oleander.

Apollo is on an upper hillside terrace and looks down over the roof of Hestia to the sea. The individual villa terraces are not overlooked.

The villas look out north across the sea to the mountains of the Greek mainland and south to the entrance to Mogonisi Bay and beyond to the cliffs of neighbouring AntiPaxos.

Large terraces provide theatrical seating to follow the slow progress of local fishing boats and the arrival of yachts and ferries from other Ionian islands. By night the theatre turns to the twinkling lights from the mountain villages on the mainland.

Spacious interiors open out on to comfortably furnished chilling, dining and gazing terraces with good shade.

The walk to the Mogonisi beach and tavernas takes about 20 minutes (or a drive of 5 minutes). With a hired boat, moored in Mogonisi Bay, one can reach the sandy beaches of AntiPaxos in 15 minutes. Beaches along the coastline towards Gaios are within walking distance – the nearest, just below, is a 2 minute walk away.

Location: car hire recommended. Gaios (a good selection of tavernas, shops and boat hire) is a drive of 10 minutes. Mogonisi (sandy beach, a taverna and a café bar cum snack bar) is under 1 kilometre away. Paxos Beach Hotel (tennis and restaurant) is 800 metres away.

Accommodation: ground floor of three double bedrooms, each with an en suite shower room (one double can convert to a twin bedroom); cloakroom; laundry room. First floor of an open-plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen.
