Claudia
Just a ten minute drive inland from the west coast village and beaches of Paliokastritsa is the pretty hilltop village of Doukades.
Whereas Paliokastritsa is visited by many, Doukades hides away as if in another century: narrow cobbled streets, tall Venetian houses with flaking pastel-coloured plaster, traditional tavernas and cafenions, small squares and just the occasional click of a worry bead.
Villa Claudia was once the private residence of Georgios Theotokis, who was the prime minister of Greece in the late 19th Century.
Claudia is a magnificent mansion with 7,000 square metres of beautifully planted gardens, a private pool and large stone terraces with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the terracotta rooftops of Doukades village.
The villa has been brought into the 21st Century to provide modern standards of comfort but the careful attention to preserving its proud and elegant heritage means that Claudia will not suit those looking for a contemporary, streamlined holiday home.
