Vathy, the capital port of Ithaca, has a beautiful horseshoe waterfront of houses overlooking a magnificent bay, flanked by green hillsides.

Nearby lies the Cave of the Nymphs where Odysseus hid the gifts of King Alcinoos. The Phaeacians returned a sleeping Odysseus to the neighbouring Bay of Dexia. Arethusa’s Fountain can be found above a little beach just south of Vathy Bay.

Vathy has a good selection of tavernas and shops but refreshingly it is a Greek “working” port and not a tourist “resort”.

Limonia hides away in a quiet residential Vathy street just a 5 minute walk away from the shops and tavernas on and behind the waterfront. We only know of two other Vathy townhouses with their own pool.

The house, built in 1920 in the traditional Ionian 'Venetian' style and recently brought into the 21st Century by its British owners, is surrounded on three sides by olive groves and citrus orchards. Views from the private gardens and pool terraces are up to the hillsides above Vathy Bay.

The peaceful gardens contain olive, fig, lemon, orange, pomegranate, pink pepper and almond trees. Splashes of colour are provided by bougainvillaea, wisteria, jasmine and oleander. Mint, sage and rosemary grow close to the barbecue and dining area, which is shaded by grapevine.

Secluded beaches are a 15 minute walk or a short drive or boat ride away. A hired boat can be moored on the waterfront.

The owners point out that “this is not a generic holiday villa but one to which we have added our own unique style, set in a little bit of paradise. It is a comfortable place to visit, relax and enjoy.”

Location: car hire not essential but recommended for part of a holiday here in order to explore the island. We recommend the hiring of a local boat with outboard engine in order to find the many peopleless beaches along Ithaca’s east coast.
