Dexa Beach lies within a large bay of olive groves, one kilometre north of Vathy, the island’s capital port. Behind the beach there are just a few houses hidden amongst the olive groves and there exists a sleepy and peaceful atmosphere.
In Homer's Oddysey, Areti was the Queen of the Phaeacians. Odysseus was returned to Ithaca by a Phaeacian longboat (the boat was then petrified by Poseidon). It is said that the Phaeacians dropped a sleeping Odysseus off on Dexa Beach.
Areti House is set on a hillside of olive groves just 100 metres above Dexa beach.
Comfortable, modern interiors open out on to wide terraces with fantastic views across the bay to the eastern coastline of Ithaca.
There is a simple snack bar/cantina (no music) just above the beach.
Maid service & linen change once per week.
Location: car hire is recommended for ease of access to all parts of Ithaca, which is too diverse to ignore exploration. Vathy (shops, tavernas and boat hire) is just a 5 minute drive.
Accommodation:
Ground floor of an open-plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen; one twin bedroom; bathroom with shower. First floor of one double bedroom and en suite bathroom with shower; one bedroom with one set of bunk beds and one bedroom with a small double bed; small bathroom with shower.
Facilities:
We have spent many glorious holidays on different Greek islands over many years and Ithaca reminds us of the islands in the 1960's - a simple but beautiful escape from a busy world outside - no trappings of tourism but friendly people, good food, deserted beaches and a coastline without buildings.
Areti was a comfortable base and close to Dexa beach for our morning swim.
