THE BEST HOLIDAY VILLAS IN EUROPE FOR 2021
Love villas, but fancy hotel facilities on the side?
High above Fiscardo, Verikoko has access to tennis, squash, gym and spa at the Emelisse hotel, which is a five-minute walk away.
The villa is bright and modern, spilling out from almost every room on to a wide patio with a dining table, Jacuzzi and infinity pool.
There are dizzying views from its hilltop perch across the Ionian to Ithaca and its cliffs that burn pink at dusk; a footpath leads down to a gin-clear swimming cove where the water is in the high 20's, even in October.

Thanks to loggerhead turtles' fondness for Zakynthos, there's a protected marine park around the island, with an abundance of underwater life.
Even without snorkels or scuba gear, you'll get a fish-eye view of this submarine world in five chic villas on a promontory on the northeast coast near Agios Nikolaos: each has an underwater camera that beams live images on the villa's TV.
The private-pool villas, in wild geardens with olive, pine and cypress trees, sleep between 4 and 14.

Hilltop House lives up to its name, a ten minute stroll up a slope from the sleepy fishing village and marina of Kioni in the northeast of the Ionian island of Ithaca. It comes with a seven metre pool, al fresco dining area shaded by grapevines, three simply decorated bedrooms and a lounge with exposed beams and comfy sofas.
Great walks along ancient pathways are to be had in the surrounding countryside.

50 BEST VILLAS
There's no air-conditioning here, but if any Greek villa can get away with it, it's Hilltop House.
High above the seafront village of Kioni - a footpath through pine forests and olive groves is a pretty 10 minutes down, but a sweatier 15 up - the handsome three-bedroom pad is cooled by sea breezes and has a shady terrace and, unusually for these parts, a pool.

According to Homer's Odyssey, Odysseues was returned to his Ithaca homeland by Phaeacians, who dropped him off at this small beach north of the island capital of Vathy.
These days it's relatively quiet, as Ithaca is overshadowed by noisier neighbours such as Kefalonia and Lefkada.
The beach is instantly instagrammable: an arc of fine sand backed by pines and olive trees, and lapped by shallow waters.
Just off the sand is a pair of villas, Dexa Beach House 1 and 2 ....

10 TOP VILLAS IN GREECE

50 HOT VILLAS
Sea views and proximity to the beach are the holy grail on this Ionian island.
Villa Avra has all that - at a bargain price - with vistas over Lakka Bay (10 minutes on foot) and cooling cream décor.
The pool isn't huge, but you're mere minutes from Harami Beach (turquoise shallows, tick; seafront tavernas, tick).

THE 50 BEST VILLAS IN THE MED
ASPRO ALOGO
The British owners of this pretty stone house near the port of Loggos have transformed it into a contemporary and cosy bolt hole.
They have done a good job: a double bedroom sits on a mezzanine above the open-plan living area, with its stylish kitchen and shower room.
A private courtyard has a plunge pool and wooden sunloungers, and is fringed by beautiful bougainvillea.

More than 1,000ft above Afales Bay, on Ithaca's north coast, is the tiny red-roofed village of Exogi. The name means "out of this world", and it's home to Fassoulou's Cottage.
Fassoulou was a widow who grew fabulous vegetables irrigated with water she carried up the hill from the spring, balancing her bucket on her head.
There's running water in the two-bedroom cottage now, but that's probably the only running you'll encounter in this sleepy village, where birdsong and the tinkling of goat bells are the loudest noises.
The sea views should be enough to keep you glued to the terrace, but if you need to get closer, there's a cove at Polis, two miles down the hill.

.... The Loutsa Retreat is at the end of Vathy's port road which hugs the bay and narrows as it winds around the port.
And what a villa it is. Secluded and shrouded by a fine landscaped mature garden of pines and olive trees, the property has a vast open living cum dining area, with offshoots where you can relax on pebbles under pines, by the pool, or the terrace overlooking the bay.
This is a serious party house, with a shaded outdoor dining area and a little cottage in the grounds with bathroom and mini kitchen.
It's homely and yet a bit posh. Maid Mimosa will not only sort the place out, she'll also cook you the most incredible dinner and serve it.
All you hear is cicadas, children splasging in the sandy beach opposite and the gentle whirr of the boats chugging into port. Bliss.
A tiny white church sits halfway up the hill opposite, which appears to have no roads leading to it, and beyond that there's nothing but the green hillsides and deep blue sea.
We could be the only inhabitants.

VRIKA - ANTIPAXOS

Holidaymakers on the island of Paxos will often jump on the regular fishing boat shuttle to the neighbouring island of AntiPaxos to swim off its golden beaches, of which Vrika is the best.

Beach House, Paxos
There's no pool at Beach House but with the sea just outside the door there's no need for one.

Q: We'd like a charming villa on a Greek island for a week in late June, up to £4,000. Eight of us will be staying for a family get-together. Can you suggest somewhere near a beach, with a pool and a little nightlife?

A: Villa Samantha, on Paxos, would also suit you brilliantly. Set on a hillside terrace, it sleeps up to 10 and is a 20-minute walk from the harbour town of Gaios, where you'll find many tavernas and bars. The house has great views and a dreamy infinity pool. A week in June costs £2,300 with Ionian Villas, which can also arrange a one-hour speedboat transfer from Corfu for up to nine people; it costs £215 each way.

Cut adrift from the mainland in some of the clearest waters of the Ionian Sea, the tiny island of Meganisi offers a seductive glimpse of Greek life before the charter flight, with three small villages and one taxi, but a glut of tiny coves and beaches lapped by a mosaic of cobalts and blues.
Arenia, on a hillside among the olive groves on the southeast coast, is a minute's stroll from a gently shelving bone-white beach, but good luck dragging yourself away from the villa's terrace pool.
