A six kilometre drive north from Corfu Town along the east coast, takes you to the seaside village of Kontokali.
On a peaceful, residential stretch of coastline, on the outskirts of Kontokoli village, is the beautiful private property of The Durrell's Retreat, used for the recent TV filming as the Durrell family's residence.
The beautiful Venetian house is directly above the sea and has large gardens, planted amongst olive, umbrella pine and citrus trees. The gardens lead to a private sunbathing jetty.
Brought sensitively from the 18th Century into the 21st Century, the Durrell's Retreat will appeal to those looking for a comfortable escape with attachments to the past rather than bland modern luxury.
The ground floor bathroom contains a marble bath, once owned by Empress Elizabeth of Austria at her summer residence ‘The Achilleon’ on Corfu.
The Retreat looks out across the sea to the tiny island of Lazaretto, which housed the headquarters of the occupying Italian army during the Second World War. In the distance are the mountains of the Greek mainland.
As seen in the TV series, the Retreat's seafront location is stunning. The Durrell's Retreat is elegant and spacious and is within easy walking distance of a good selection of nearby tavernas and shops.
Included in the rental price is a breakfast chef (menu choices provided). The chef is available to prepare lunches and dinners on request (at extra cost).

Location: beach, tavernas and a minimarket are within a 10 minute stroll but we recommend car hire to explore the island. Corfu Town is 6 kilometres.

Ground floor of a reception room (with grand piano); sitting room, dining room; kitchen; bathroom. First floor of one double bedroom with adjacent sitting room and shower room; one double bedroom and en suite shower room. Second floor of three double bedrooms (can convert to twins), each with an en suite shower room.
