Portokali
Paxos is so small that wherever you stay, you are never far from one of the island’s ports or beaches.
It is however, possible to find an island retreat that is hidden away with total privacy and with beautiful, natural surroundings. Villa Portokali is one of these special retreats.
Portokali is amongst the olive groves of a tiny hamlet called Manesatika, just a 10 minute walk from the village of Magazia. A small track continues its way past Portokali's driveway and just a few other hamlet houses and leads through olive groves to the west coast hamlet of Kastanida with its dramatic sunsets. Portokali however, looks out over the east coast.
Views are over a wide valley of olive, pine and cypress trees and across the sea to the Greek mainland and the cliffs of south west Corfu. By night there is a theatre of twinkling lights from the mountain villages on the mainland.
Portokali was once a traditional house of stone with a large garden. Its present owners have retained the feel of simplicity and tradition but have added modern and comfortable touches. When the owners stay in August they rarely leave the comforts of their home and it is evident why.
The gardens combine a series of stone terraces, built around olive trees, a large swimming pool, an outdoor kitchen and a large dining and relaxing terrace – all bordered by soft colours of plumbago and jasmine. There are many garden areas to find both sun and shade.
Private swimming pool 12 x 6 metres & depth 1.20 - 2.20 metres
Maid service three times weekly & linen change twice weekly.
Location: car hire recommended. 10 minute walk (2 minute drive) to Magazia (two tavernas, well stocked minimarket). 10 minute drive to shops, tavernas, boat hire and beaches of Loggos, Lakka and Gaios. 10 minute drive to Erimitis beach.

"Although a tad chilly, the pool is a decent size and so a proper swimming pool.
There are some great walks in this area - our favourite is down through olive groves to Ipapandi church.
The house feels nicely secluded but Magazia village is an easy walk."

"We had a FABULOUS time on Paxos again this year. Even better than the last we think - possibly because we discovered even more incredibly beautiful little beaches. We couldn't believe how crystal clear the sea was and the perfect temperature for hours of swimming and snorkelling! September is definitely the best month to visit (in our view) - all the fun without too many people!
Portakali was a wonderful house and suited us perfectly. It had a lovely lived-in feel, felt spacious and a fantastic amount of really decent pots and pans etc for cooking (not that we did more than have a couple of barbeques!).
Also our mattress was extremely comfortable (I would love to know the make but couldn't find the label!).
We shall definitely return in a couple of years - probably explore another Greek island next September."
