Most travel writers who visit Paxos include a glowing mention of Monodendri beach on Paxos’ east coast, in between Loggos and Lakka.

At one end of the beach there is Bastas Taverna (serving the best grilled octopus and feta pizza we have tasted) and at the other end: Ben’s Bar (with resident masseur and ambient music to accompany a long list of cocktails) and on a hillside terrace above is Eftihia (Ben’s mum)’s excellent taverna with freshly caught fish and freshly plucked ingredients and our favourite lunchtime Paxos view.

The winding access road down to Monodendri passes about eight houses but the valley above the beach is delightfully natural and thick with olive groves, peppered by tall cypress and bushy pine.

Just 250 metres above the beach are the two villas, Narkissa and Delia. The villas are identical apart from a few differences in colour schemes.

There is a distance of 10 metres between the villas but the swimming pool terraces are on the far side of each villa and are totally private.

Delia has stunning views over the surrounding olive groves and across the sea to the Greek mainland.

Just below the villa is the beach, fringed by olive trees, and a choice of two of the best tavernas on the island.

Location: car hire recommended. Monodendri beach is a 3 minute walk away. Loggos is under a 10 minute drive and Lakka is a 5 minute drive. Loggos and Lakka have waterfront tavernas, shops and boat hire.

Accommodation: ground floor of an open-plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen; one twin bedroom; bathroom with shower. First floor of one double bedroom; bathroom with shower.

  The owner has not put a CD player in the villa because he thinks guests will prefer the "music of cicadas"!
