Eftihia means "Happiness" in Greek.
The four Eftihia Villas are 400 metres away from Fanari beach on the island's north-east coast, surrounded by olive groves and hillsides of pine and cypress trees.
Even closer there is a private, stepped pathway to a small beach of shingle and pebbles.
Each villa has its own hillside terrace – about 50 metres apart. The villas are set in large, private grounds of Mediterranean grasses and maquis, surrounded by pine and cypress trees.
Although only one kilometre away from the island’s inland village of Katomeri and two kilometres from the pretty port of Vathy, the Eftihia Villas enjoy peaceful seclusion with beautiful, natural surroundings.
Views are along the forested coastline and across the sea to the mountains of the Greek mainland.
Each villa has a private swimming pool 8 x 3.5 metres & depth 1.1 – 1.4 metres
Maid service & linen change once per week (more often on request)
Location: car hire recommended in order to have easy access to the island’s villages and many beaches. The shops, bakery and tavernas of Katomeri are a drive of 5 minutes. The port of Vathy is a drive of 10 minutes and has 2 supermarkets and 6 waterfront tavernas. Boat hire can be found at Vathy.
Accommodation:
Each villa has an open-plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen; one double bedroom and en suite shower room; one twin bedroom and en suite shower room.
Facilities:
Meganisi is a nice island with very clear, clean waters for swimming.
There are a number of points to be aware of when going to stay in Meganisi:
1) The ferry from Nidri has a limited number of trips per day which may not suit your arrival time at Aktion / Prevezza airport. We arrived at the airport on a Saturday evening, so booked an Airbnb for the first night in Lefkada town. We then drove down to Nidri in the morning to catch the Noon ferry to Meganisi. Do not worry if the queue for the ferry looks quite long (you cannot book in advance) because there is room for 66 cars on the ferry and it is rarely full. The ferry trip takes about half an hour.
2) The roads in Meganisi are generally very good with very little traffic. There are a couple of stretches of newly surfaced road which we called the M1 and the M2. You rarely see another car, perhaps because most of the tourists on Meganisi come from the yachts. In some of the towns the roads can be extremely and worryingly narrow. But, in some cases, such as in Katomeri, one-way systems have been introduced. The main town, Vathy closes its roads to cars in the centre every evening at 7 pm.
3) We collected our hire car from Prevezza airport. We chose Hertz because the Greek company recommended by the Ionian Villas rep was more expensive. We paid 65 euros extra to get insurance cover for the ferry trip to Meganisi. However, the Hertz desk clerk warned us that there is no representative in Meganisi, so, if anything should go wrong (such as a puncture, breakdown or accident) no-one could come and assist us! I said, then what is the point of paying insurance? And the only answer I could get was, let’s see if the occasion arises.
4) Beaches. The only one we found with sunbeds and umbrellas was Fanari Beach.
Otherwise, there are others with very few people, but take your own umbrella.
5) The restaurants in Meganisi are not very many, but there is good quality food to be had … at a price.
The best ones we found are:
Errikos – in Vathy. Top quality, top prices.
Niagas – near our villa. Good quality, standard prices.
Taverna Lakis – in Spartochori. Some nights they have Greek dancing.
And if you take a boat trip, you must prebook lunch at Varka – on Kalamos island. This is the best of all.
6) There are a few health centres, which are willing to attend to emergencies for free. I got stung by a wasp at Fanari beach and had an allergic reaction which was promptly and efficiently cured at one of these centres in Katomeri.
7) On the way home, be aware that the signs for Prevezza airport are appallingly bad. There is a super new dual carriageway at some point from Lefkada town to the airport. We followed signs to Aktion, which took us off the good road and down a disturbingly rural back road through olive groves, then back to another good road. The trick, which we only discovered by some trial and error, was then to follow the signs to Prevezza instead, and at one roundabout there is a tiny aeroplane sign which points you to turn left to the airport.
