In centuries past, when the port of Gaios was attacked by pirates, the women and children were hidden in a hilltop village called Geramonachos, surrounded by olive groves.
Most of the village houses have now crumbled and fallen but the area is known by the islanders for its peaceful seclusion.
An east coast road starts at Gaios port and passes a string of beaches before turning inland – a small track then leads off to Geramonachos.
Villa Rosa has a private hillside location just below the deserted village and has views over the fjord-like entrance to Gaios port, the silver-leaved olive trees of the east coast and across the sea to the mountains of the Greek mainland.
East coast beaches are nearby (Kloni Gouli beach is just over half a kilometre away) and the many tavernas and shops of Gaios are a ten minute drive.
Rosa’s unusual layout works well for two families holidaying together, as each floor has its own kitchen, sitting room and outdoor dining area.
