Villa Amfissa stands on a hilltop surrounded by 50 private acres of olive groves. Its nearest neighbour (Villa Elia) is a 5 minute walk away and not visible.
A stay at Amfissa is for those seeking a total escape from the world outside. It is for those wanting to swap the sounds of clocks, cars and machinery for those of a clunk of a sheep bell, the cry of a circling eagle, the distant chirp of a lake frog, the whistling hoot of a Scops Owl, the hypnotic chatter of cicadas and the soft rustle of olive leaves catching a warm breeze.
In the drier summer months, a nearby lake turns into a brightly coloured pasture of camomile flowers.
Set in the heart of the Ropa Valley (in many people’s opinion, the most beautiful part of Corfu), Amfissa is a large and elegant country house with spacious interiors opening out on all sides to a series of terraces and grass lawns, which slope down to a large swimming pool, bordered by white and pink oleanders.
There are many different views of the sweeping, natural landscape, similar to many of the undulating Tuscan landscapes. Mount Pantakrator presides in the distance and forested hillsides hide small hamlet houses.
The Ropa Valley is a rich, agricultural area of Corfu. There is a “water park” about 3 kilometres away and the east coast beaches are not far away but otherwise it is far removed from the Corfu “resorts”.
The grass lawns will appeal to those with small children but please note that there are small steps throughout the grounds so not ideal for toddlers.
